What is VoIP?

  • The signal is received and a dial tone is sent out.
  • You then dial the phone number of the person you wish to call.
  • The phone number is sent to your voice over IP service provider and their processor checks it to make sure the format is valid.
  • It is then translated into an IP address.
  • Once the other party picks up the phone, a session is established.
  • While you talk, the two systems transmit packets of voice data back and forth.
  • These packets of data are converted to analog audio signals, which is actually what you hear.
  • When you are done with your conversation, you just hang up the phone.
